The new season of “The Walking Dead” began this week and Halloween is right around the corner. That makes it a great time to revisit Robert Kirkman’s Hyundai Elantra Coupe Zombie Survival Machine. Never mind that it was unveiled over the summer.
Elantra Coupe Zombie Survival Machine unveiled
A Hyundai Elantra may not seem at first glance to be a candidate for a bad-ass zombie-proof tank. But a closer look at the finished product quells all objections.
The modified Elantra was first unveiled at the San Diego Comic Con on July 11. The tricked-out, zombie-killing, post-apocalyptic ride was designed by Robert Kirkman, who created the comic book series “The Walking Dead.” He is also a producer on the AMC television series adapted from the comic book.
“Working with Hyundai on this Zombie Survival Machine was a total blast and I am excited to share this stunning vehicle with all the fans.”

Surviving 100 issues
It was made to promote the release of the 100th issue of “The Walking Dead” comic book, which features the car in its storyline. But its existence doesn’t do any damage to Hyundai, either.
Steve Shannon, vice president of Marketing, Hyundai Motor America, said:
“Our custom Elantra Coupe Zombie Survival Machine is the ultimate car for “The Walking Dead” fans and anyone who wants to survive a zombie invasion. We are excited for fans to come and experience the Elantra Coupe and GT in a unique, post-apocalyptic way.”
Comic Con debut
The Elantra Coupe Zombie Survival Machine was a bigger hit than fresh brains at the San Diego Comic Con. It had its own booth where attendees could take pictures and even sit inside the car. Visitors were also treated to a peek at the “owner’s manual,” describing the car’s various devices and how they can be used to either destroy or keep passengers safe from marauding animated corpses.
Kirkman, who knows little about cars, knows plenty about surviving a zombie apocalypse. He should after 100 plus issues of “The Walking Dead.” He drew the car, but the actual modifications to the Elantra were accomplished by Southern California’s Design Craft Fabrication.
The Hyundai Elantra Coupe Zombie Survival Machine features armor shutters on the windows, a zombie-smashing front-end plow rimmed with spikes (perfect for those crowds of shamblers in the middle of the street), a roof hatch that allows armed passengers to pick off the undead, a trunk full of weapons, spiked tires and more.
Prepare for the zombie apocalypse
I’m wondering if Hyundai might consider a production run of the Elantra Coupe Zombie Survival Machine? It should start now so that people can prepare for the zombie apocalypse. After society collapses, it will be murder to get car loans.
