The last Ford Mustangs of the current generation are rolling off the line, and as a tribute, Shelby is offering 50 buyers the option of a Super Snake Signature Edition. The limited number of conversion packages will turn the already bonkers Shelby GT500 into a truly insane performance car.

Secret to new Super Snake is a whacking great blower

The term Super Snake conjures images of the Shelby Cobra, as the original Super Snake was an evolution of that car. Caroll Shelby took two 427 Cobras and slapped turbochargers on them, tuning them up to 800 horsepower or more. He kept one and sold the other one to Bill Cosby, who sold it back because it almost made him soil himself. Another guy bought it, and then drove it off a cliff and bought it.

Since then, there have been a few Super Snake Mustangs with drastic improvements over the base car, including the current base Super Snake kit, which according to AutoWeek adds suspension, handling, braking, cooling and aerodynamic upgrades to the GT500 for a modest $29,000 on top of the base cost of the car.

For an extra $11,000, they’ll toss in a 3.6-liter Kenne Bell supercharger, which cranks up the horsepower to 850 raging ponies.

Now, though, Shelby is offering a Super Snake Signature Edition, which adds, according to Digital Trends, a few extra refinements on top of the supercharger.

Kit car to end all kit cars

There’s more to the Super Snake Signature Edition than just an enormous blower, though it isn’t a factory vehicle, but rather a conversion kit that Shelby installs.

The Shelby American Super Snake Signature Edition Package, according to MotorAuthority – has to be installed on a 2007 to 2014 Ford Shelby GT500, though it can be the coupe or convertible. You buy the kit and the build time from Shelby, and they’ll stop accepting orders in January 2014.

The cost of the kit is $44,995, not including the cost of buying the base vehicle, which is about $50,000. Buyers have to supply it.

However, along with the insane 850 horsepower comes upgraded brakes, suspension, cooling system interior trim and aerodynamics. Shelby will even throw in a wide-body kit if one asks for it.

Get a free track day out of it, though

Buyers of this Super Snake package will also get a complimentary track day, where Shelby American will host them and teach them how to drive their new cars…which is a handy idea, since the original Super Snake had a 33 percent mortality rate.

The reason for the new package is that the current generation of Mustang is on the way out, ahead of the 50th Anniversary of the Mustang and the new edition. The Shelby Mustangs are iconic, prized among enthusiasts of the breed, and the old girl deserves a bit of a send-off.
