Automotive News reports that a senior manager with Lamborghini’s parent company, Audi, has confirmed that the Italian supercar-maker will soon reveal a Lamborghini SUV crossover. Following in the footsteps of the LM002 line, the new Lamborghini will reportedly offer dramatic new styling, yet the same luxurious equipment for which the automaker is known.

Lamborghini SUV to be one of three new models

The anonymous Audi manager who spoke with Automotive News confirmed that press speculation regarding the upcoming Lamborghini SUV is “largely correct,” although the manager would not speak in detail. It is believed that the new crossover vehicle is intended to be Lamborghini’s successor to both the LM002 and the Gallardo. Lamborghini’s new SUV is gauged to be an upmarket rival for the Maserati Kubang, BMW X6 and an upcoming four-door, coupe-like off-road vehicle that will be offered by Mercedes-Benz. It is conceived to sell less than 1,500 annually, with the U.S. and China as key markets.

Lamborghini’s closely guarded SUV secret is slated to make its public debut at the Beijing Motor Show in late April. It will join at least three new models slated to appear in the Lamborghini lineup beginning in 2016. A fourth model – a four-door sedan – is also reportedly under consideration.

Around and under the hood

The Lamborghini SUV will reportedly go on sale with a de-tuned 5.2-liter V10 engine that produces about 580 hp. A 4WD hybrid version that combines a standard V10 with a 107-hp electric motor to produce 660 hp is also under consideration.

The 197-inch Lamborghini SUV with short-wheelbase form will be dramatically lighter than the LM002, largely due to the use of aluminum and carbon fiber. Lamborghini’s goal is to produce a crossover that weighs less than 4,400 pounds.

Assembly of the Lamborghini SUV crossover is expected to take place at the Volkswagen Group’s factory in Bratislava, Slovakia, while final assembly will reportedly occur at Lamborghini’s Sant’Agata Bolognese in Bologna, Italy.
