Cynics, curmudgeons and skeptics will insist up and down the board that GMC trucks, vans and SUVs are just Chevrolets wearing different grilles and they are kind of right. However, GMC insists that it really won’t be the case when the next-generation GMC Canyon light pickup comes out.
GMC insists next GMC Canyon really will be different this time
It isn’t exactly secret that GMC vehicles and Chevrolet vehicles are basically the same, except some say “GMC” on the front of them. The components are basically the same except the for the grille and, for the most part, a few hundred bucks tacked onto the GMC model’s price tag. As a result, more people buy Chevrolets.
However, GMC wants to do something about that, by creating a different model where once it was the same thing with a different sticker on it. Namely, the GMC Canyon, the light pickup truck that is also known as the Chevrolet Colorado. GMC, according to AutoGuide, has disclosed that the 2014 GMC Canyon will be a completely different vehicle from the Colorado.
The company said the truck will be a “GMC through and through.”
Few details aside from where it will be built
The notion is amusing, since a GMC is a re-badged Chevrolet and therefore, this pending “through and through” GMC won’t really be a “through and through GMC” because it isn’t a Chevy.
There is, of course, some good reason for it. The GMC Canyon doesn’t sell as well as its Colorado counterpart. According to Automobile magazine, GMC sold 9,590 Canyons to 31,026 Colorados in 2011 and in the previous year, GMC sold 7,992 Canyons to Chevy’s 24,642 Colorados. That $500 difference is killer.

However, very little is known about this pending light pickup, aside from that it will be built at General Motors’ plant in Wentzville, Missouri. It’s likely to start production in late 2013 and arrive in 2014. The new Chevy Colorado arrives next year, so people in the market for a new truck may want to start talking to their favorite car loan bank next summer.
New Colorado does look good
If the new GMC Canyon is going to be anything like the upcoming Chevrolet Colorado, it might be a truck worth checking out. Not everyone really needs a full-size truck, so those who need a bed but not a thirsty V-8 in a vehicle the size of a battleship might want to pay keep an eye out for them.
Developed in Thailand and also sold as the Isuzu D-Max, Holden Colorado and the new Colorado is based on the global model, which is sold basically everywhere other than the United States and was released this year. It certainly looks good in pictures, being a bit more sculpted than the domestic Colorado. It’s about 3 inches longer, according to Inside Line, and a few inches wider but a shorter wheelbase.
The engine choices will obviously be different than the global model, which is only available with a 2.5-liter or 2.8-liter Duramax turbodiesel inline-four, which produce 150 and 180 horsepower, respectively. However, pricing and trim levels are going to remain roughly the same, but it will certainly look sharper.
