As a benefit for the EAA Young Eagles organization of aviators, an historic auction involving a one-of-a-kind classic Ford vehicle will take place. A “Red Tails” Ford Mustang GT 5.0-liter glass-roof coupe, which was created to commemorate the African-American Tuskegee Airmen who flew red-tailed P51 Mustang fighters during World War II, will be auctioned Thursday in Oshkosh, Wis. Bidding is reportedly already closed, but the results will be revealed.
Honoring the Red Tails
The Tuskegee Airmen of the 332nd Fighter Group and the 477th Bombardment Group were the United States’ first African-American military air unit. During WWII, the Tuskegee Airmen fought for their country during a time when Jim Crow laws still restricted the public lives of black people at home. The rest of the U.S. military and federal government were racially segregated, in much the same way as American society.
The Tuskegee Airmen faced not only the Axis powers, but racial discrimination within their own military. In spite of the difficulties, the airmen trained for combat and flew with great distinction. The Tuskegee designation came from where the black pilots (including five Haitians) trained for air combat.
Tuskegee Airmen praised for perseverance
All proceeds from the Red Tails Mustang auction will benefit the EAA Young Eagles, a group that gives young pilots of all races and creeds the chance to excel. Edsel B. Ford of the automaker’s board of directors praised the way in which the Tuskegee Airmen excelled, in spite of the obstacles they faced during the war.
“The perseverance and excellence displayed by the Tuskegee Airmen are qualities we also celebrate at Ford,” he said via a news release. “With this year’s beautiful ‘Red Tails’ edition Mustang, we’ve captured the recognizable symbols in honor of their important role in our history, and paired it with the innovation our Ford design and engineering teams build into all of our products.”

Details on the Red Tails Ford Mustang GT 5.0
Both the VIN number (00051) and license plate of the Mustang GT 5.0 commemorate the P51 Mustang planes the Tuskegee Airmen flew during World War II. The car has a Ford Racing 2.3-liter twin-screw Whipple supercharger, as well as side exhaust and 20-inch aftermarket wheels. The cabin has a navigation screen and instrument cluster that suggests a P51 Mustang fighter plane. The seats are embroidered with the Red Tails logo, and the floor mats have the embroidered logo of the 332nd Fighter Group.
The exterior of the vehicle features polished aluminum finish paint, Race Red and School Bus Yellow colors matching those used on the P51 fighters. Just like the fighter, the tail of the Mustang car is painted red.
