The 2010 Ford Fusion, Motor Trend’s 2010 “Car of the Year,” has been hailed as the economical midsize sedan that brings both driving excitement and a green soul to a very competitive segment of the automotive market. But Fusion fans should take heed, reports Reuters. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is investigating a potential fracture problem with 2010 Fusion wheel studs on low-mileage vehicles that could lead to a loss of vehicular control.
The Ford Fusion has fueled Ford’s rebound
Some reports indicate that approximately 220,000 Ford Fusion 2010 model vehicles were sold, a 21 percent jump over Fusion sales numbers from the previous year. However, the NHTSA investigation into 2010 Fusion models could involve as many as 281,250 models, reports Reuters.
NHTSA regulators indicate that at least four complaints have been received regarding Fusion wheel stud fractures. The wheel studs are screws that serve with lug nuts to secure wheels to the vehicle. If a stud cracks, the wheel can become crooked, bend or even detach from a moving vehicle.
According to preliminary NHTSA reports, all complaints occurred on 2010 Ford Fusion models with low mileage, between 5,000 and 11,000 miles. In each case, the wheels had not been serviced before the consumer-reported incidents.
Three defective Fusions from one flock
Left Lane News auto blog writes that an additional factor in the Fusion wheel stud investigation isolates the problem to those 2010 Ford Fusions equipped with base steel wheels with wheel covers. Those Fusions with alloy or premium alloy wheels have yet to display the problem.
Reuters said that a direct statement from the NHTSA also isolated three of the four reported wheel stud problem to the same 22-vehicle fleet of 2010 Ford Fusions. Investigation is ongoing.
