It seems like there is a day for everything anymore, and its the same with the plug-in electric vehicle. National Plug In Day is a day of awareness and appreciation for the rising segment of the automotive industry. It is being celebrated in more than twice as many cities as last year. And you might even win a free iPad without getting your Facebook page hacked.

Second annual National Plug In Day

The second annual National Plug In Day is being sponsored by Plug In America, Sierra Club and the Electric Auto Association. The celebration, designed to raise the awareness of the environmental and economic benefits of electric vehicles, will take place on Sunday, September 23. Events in 60 different cities will honor all things electric auto, Spokane to Boston. That is more than double last year’s 29-city celebration.

Some of the cities will feature “ride and drive” events, in which the public will get the opportunity to ride in, or even test drive, a variety of electric vehicles. Some of the events will also sponsor free iPad giveaways.

LA ‘ride and drive’

The “ride and drive” event in Los Angeles will take place at the Automobile Driving Museum in El Segundo, where modern electric vehicles will be displayed alongside their fuel-thirsty, classic counterparts of yesteryear. In addition, there will be electric vehicle rallies, “tail-pipe free” tailgate parties, demonstrations of charging infrastructure and more.

The Los Angeles event promises to have at least one of each these vehicles on hand to look at and to try out:

- BMW ActiveE
– Chevy Volt
– Coda
– Fisker Karma
– Honda Fit EV
– Mitsubishi iMiEV
– Nissan Leaf
– Plug-In Prius
– Tesla Roadster
– Toyota RAV4 EV
– Vectrix Motorcycle
– Zero Motorcycle

Other participating cities

Other cities sponsoring National Plug In Day events include San Francisco, Austin, Dallas, Salt Lake City, Baltimore, Knoxville and Maui. You can check the National Plug In Day website (linked in sources below) to see if there is an event going on in your area.

On the rise

Late last month, the Obama Administration released its final fuel-economy standards. By 2025, all new vehicles are mandated to get at least 54.5 miles per gallon of fuel. In order to reach that goal, there is little doubt that we will be seeing an increasing number of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles on the road each year.
