Late Monday evening, Chrysler Group LLC pulled off the kind of social media striptease maneuver that quickens the pulse and leaves supercar fans wanting more. At 11:59 p.m. Monday, the automaker revealed the first official image of the next SRT Viper supercar. The black-and-white line drawing on the driveSRT Facebook page showcased the performance coupe’s roof and hood line, headlights and logo.
Redlining at 10,000 likes
Chrysler challenged Facebook fans to put the “like” pedal to the metal on its driveSRT page before the SRT Viper image would be revealed. Within minutes, driveSRT received over 12,000 “likes,” reports Automotive News.
SRT Viper back on Conner Avenue
While little tangible information has been released about the next-generation SRT Viper, Chrysler has confirmed that production will begin later this year on the new Viper as a 2013 model. It will be built at the previously shuttered Conner Avenue Assembly Plant in Detroit, Mich., where Viper production under the old Dodge name ended in 2010.
Dodge Viper production began in May 1992 at the New Mack Assembly Plant in Detroit, then moved to Conner Avenue in October 1995. Vipers were hand-built in a modular process. Daily volume was necessarily low, topping out at an average of 12 per day at the Conner Avenue plant.
Street and Racing Technology grabs the SRT Viper
The 2013 SRT Viper is no longer associated with the Dodge brand name, but with SRT, or Street and Racing Technology. SRT previously served as a high-performance sub-brand for select Dodge models. The SRT Viper will be the “halo car” for the emerging SRT brand, a Chrysler spokesman told Inside Line in December.
A production version of the new SRT Viper is slated to debut in early April at the 2012 New York Auto Show. Chrysler Group plans to announce official engine specs at that time.
